United We Stand

Almost everyone has heard the phrase or principle that a “house divided will fall”. The problem is not everyone agrees with it and some could care less if the house (name it) does fall. Barack Obama though has the opportunity that no president I know of since John F. Kennedy (yes that also includes Ronald Reagan) to UNITE our nation and even beyond our borders, the world.  <!–more–>

<!–adsense#articles–>

I said more than a year ago that Obama has the opportunity to bring racial reconciliation to our nation (not that he solves all problems!) and healing internationally (by virtue of his name if nothing else). Don’t hear that I am saying that he will, but that we have a WINDOW- an opportunity in spite of those who spread divisiveness, discord, and outright antagonisms as their daily menu.

Can you say Hannity & Rush?   :-(

“He’s a man of the people,” said Vicki Starcher, who traveled from Norfolk, Virginia, to help set up the temporary store during the inauguration. “I think the difference is with Obama, he has so much of the younger backing, BET … and the hip-hop community,” co-worker Jasmine Robinson chimed in. Ebony said Obama was one of the Top 25 Coolest Brothers of All Time, alongside Tupac Shakur, Muhammad Ali, Jay-Z and Marvin Gaye. I’m not cool with all of those comparisons, but whatever!

Two days from the White House, President-elect Barack Obama joined a vast throng Sunday at a joyous pre-inauguration celebration staged among marble monuments to past heroes. “Anything is possible in America,” declared the man who will confront economic crisis and two wars when he takes office. Anything is possible!

And within “anything” is a UNITED nation- for however long it lasts, we’ll take it. At least I will.

Simple; BELIEVE IN FREEDOM, BELIEVE AND ADHERE TO THE CONSTITUTION….. you know, like our founders envisioned?

I just can’t tolerate anti-constitutional mentality i.e. socialism, Marxism, neoconservatism, etc. If you live in this country, or better yet, SERVE this country, then adhere to the constitution for God’s sake!

I’m pro-life, but if you want your state to legalize abortion then more power to you….so long as it coincides with a constitutional decision, one way or the other, I’m entirely tolerable of it. But, don’t legislate uncontrollably.

  10. I have no problem with people thinking or feeling differently then I do… but when they start instituting legislation that forces their ideology on me, I have a problem with that. Specifically with taxes, wealth distribution, the welfare state, and government intrusion into the energy sector.

This goes both ways. I’m more of a libertarian then a republican.. and the right wing christian values of the republican party ircs me as well.

  12. Hmm sounds like your asking how to stand united without tolerating differences. Im not sure if that can be done.

How you word can make a big difference. Asking how you can tollerate others differences gives answers to that effect. Asking why you can’t tollerate others differences just gives reasons for why you can’t tollerate others differences. If you want to stand united, try focusing on how you can not why you can’t.

It’s not about enforcing unity, my friend; otherwise it would fracture just as quickly.

We are not yet ready to accept unity; so far all we know is how to cajole people into tolerating differences and accepting them insofar as they can still criticize. Both sides, liberal and conservative, practice levels of acceptance and tolerance, but are not yet ready (or willing) to celebrate those differences.

Only when society can accept difference will we truly have unity.

no really I think that is why people hate one another, people who are different are scary and those with a low IQ or those with little education can help but hate what they fear.

  19. Tolerate does not mean embrace. A population as large as the United States’ will always have sub-groups with differing values. Tolerance means I do not physically attack someone else because they have different values than I do. It does not mean I have to agree with any other group or their values.

  20. Is "stand united" the new code for "shut up and let the government do whatever it wants to"?

I’m okay with people being "different," and having different points of view. I’m not okay when "tolerance" is code for "supporting things I do not agree with."

I am a Christian and the Bible tells me I must believe and live a certain way. God’s way. There are lots of differences between us that should be tolerated. Everyone has different likes and tastes. But some differences cannot be tolerated according to God and therefore we must separate ourselves from these issues. I can’t tolerate homosexuality, abortion and the way the country has thrown God out of everything in America. There is a wide gap between tolerating and standing with. I won’t stand with people who go against God’s principles no matter how unpopular they may be. Politically correct means nothing to me. A lot of different issues and people stand behind that term. God has made it pretty simple. You either accept Him, repent and live by his Word and live forever in heaven or you deny him, live rebellious, unrepenting lives and burn in hell for e-t-e-r-n-i-t-y! That is why some things can’t be tolerated. They contribute to the decay of our society. Look at our society and the proof is in the pudding. I will not stand united with man against God to fall into hell. But we are also to hate no man. We are to hate their sin. Praying for all you unsaved.

Until we start holding our representatives responsible for what they do instead of looking to find fault with the other party we are urged to have intolerance and political blindness.

  23. "Without tolerating our differences, how can we stand united?"

If not everyone can respect our Constitution, there is no point in standing together.

"Why can’t you tolerate other peoples differences?"

Because I am intolerant when it comes to people who would take away my freedoms.
